On April 21, 1923, Alfred D. Evans Jr. was born to parents Anna Evans (nee Trout) and Alfred D. Evans in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was their second of three children, following an older sister: Caroline Grace Evans and before a younger brother, Richard James Evans. 

Alfred Jr. was raised at 622 N Shippen St in Lancaster, where he attended McKaskey and Frankford High Schools, graduating in 1941. His father was a plumber, and his mother a maid.

He never wed. The United States joined the Second World War in December 11, 1941. His enlistment came sixteen days later. He was eighteen
